Kyoto, Shimogyō Ward, Kakimotocho 590-1
14:30 - 00:30
The name Gokō-yu literally means “hot water with 5 fragrances”. This sentō is just a few minutes away from the intersection of Horikawa and Gojō streets on the first two floors of an apartment building. It is an inner-city super sentō, with a good variety of baths.
Among the different kind of baths is a milky bath, made that way by tiny little air bubbles in the water. This bath is said to be good for the skin, and at least while in the bath the water makes your skin feel very smooth. There is also a medicinal bath with herbs, a jacuzzi, a jet bath and an electrical bath on the first floor. A climb up the stairs brings you to the very hot “Himalayan rock salt” bath, a hot sauna and a very hot sauna.
This public bath is large enough to spend a few hours soaking and relaxing, and if you get hungry there is food available from the diner. It is almost a surprise that the entrance fee is the standard fee (see the right-hand column).
